The Public Health Nursing Surge Curriculum is a competency-based curriculum, founded on the 25 Public Health Nursing Competencies Related to Surge Events. It is a competency-based curriculum founded on the 25 Public Health Nursing Competencies Related to Surge Events, and it will enable Public Health Nurses to practice their discipline-specific role in preparedness for, response to, and recovery from disaster surge incidents. It is comprised of two sections:  the Hiking Workshop--a 6-hour classroom based seminar and the ExploreSurge TrailGuide--an independent study comprised of 12 separate mileposts.  You will need to register for both of these independently of each other.

Upon completion of this curriculum, learners will be able to:

  • Describe aspects of public health nursing disaster preparedness and prevention,
  • Distinguish the role of the public health nurse in disaster surge from other practice partners,
  • Discuss appropriate public health nursing interventions during the response phase of disaster surge, and
  • Identify the role of the public health nurse in the sustainment of recovery efforts after a disaster incident.

This independent study has been approved for 44 contact hours by the Ohio Nurses Association (OBN-001-91), an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
